Maldives felicitated for Public Health achievement of EMTCT of HIV and Syphilis by WHO South East Asia

New Delhi, 3 September 2019 – Minister of Health of Maldives Honorable Abdulla Ameen was awarded recognition for Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV and Syphilis; by Regional Director for WHO South East Asia Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh.

Presenting citations to the Ministers for their public health achievements at a side event during the Seventy Second Session of WHO Regional Committee of South-East Asia in New Delhi, the Regional Director, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, and said, “disease eliminations have always been high on our agenda. When I talk about sustain, accelerate and innovate, ‘accelerate’ is to step up efforts to eliminate diseases like the neglected tropical diseases.”

100 Leprosy Free Islands by 2023: Launching of framework for Zero Leprosy in the Maldives

15th July 2019- An ambitious yet attainable plan to achieve 100 Leprosy-free islands by 2023 was jointly launched by Honorable Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen, and Regional Director for WHO South East Asia Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, at a ceremony held today. The plan was launched as part of the two-day agenda of Dr Singh’s visit to the Maldives and is the first of such a plan for Leprosy in the world.

Maldives certified for Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission (EMTCT) of HIV and Syphilis

15th July 2019: Another Public Health Milestone for Maldives as WHO Regional Director Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh awarded the certificate of “Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV and Syphilis to Vice President of the Maldives His Excellency Faisal Naseem. An official plaque and citation was handed over in an official ceremony held in Male to mark this momentous occasion in presence of Hon Health Minster HE Abdulla Ameen, other Cabinet Ministers, members of National Validation Committee for EMTCT, senior officials from different ministries, academia, civil society organizations, UN and international organizations.

World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2018 – Think Twice, Seek Advice

Each November, World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) aims to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance and to encourage best practices among the public; health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.

Partnering with Maldives Food and Drug Authority, Ministry of Health, WHO Country office supported various activities including continued transmission of information on AMR on several TV channels additional to TV talk show where experts provided more detailed information. An animated video in both English and local language Dhivehi was developed and showed in all health facilities and also at MOH reception targeting visitors to these places.

6th September 2017- Director General of WHO Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Regional Director for WHO South East Asia Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh together with the Minister of Health of the Maldives Honorable Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim inaugurated an Electronic Photo Exhibition which showcases the work of the WHO South East Asia in the Region. The electronic exhibition was an initiative taken by the Region to further reinforce the theme of this year’s ‘Green’ Seventieth Regional Committee meeting, and an effort to reduce paper waste.

Freedom from Filaria- Maldives is the first country in the WHO South East Asia Region to officially eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis

19th July 2016 - At a ceremony held today, WHO’s South East Asia Regional Director Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh awarded a plaque and a citation to the government of Maldives for eliminating lymphatic filariasis, a dangerous disease familiar to the country for over 50 years. The plaque was accepted on behalf of the Maldives by Honorable Minister of Health Mr Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim.
