Inception workshop for launching BIN (Bhutan, India and Nepal) Project funded by Codex Trust Fund

An inception workshop was organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on 21 June 2019 in Delhi for launching BIN (Bhutan, India and Nepal) Project funded by Codex Trust Fund (CTF). This is the first group project approved by CTF at global level and first CTF project to be implemented in Asia. The workshop was attended by national food safety authorities and key stakeholders from Bhutan, India and Nepal and facilitated by WHO. The workshop was important to define roles and responsibilities of implementing agencies (Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority, FSSAI and Department of Food Technology and Quality Control), CTF, WHO and to clarify issues and challenges in implementing this project including group activities. The participating countries agreed on timelines for project implementation in 2019.

Codex Workshop in New Delhi

A two-day training workshop on Codex was held in New Delhi from 5-6 September 2018 which was designed to enhance capacity of Codex Contact Points for Asian countries to effectively participate in Codex activities. The workshop was an opportunity to learn online Codex activities and interact with Codex Contact Points from neighboring countries. Many of them were learning Codex online tool for the first time. It was also a platform to discuss issues of regional interest such as Codex activities in Asia, Codex Trust Fund, development of regional standards and upcoming events.

20th CCASIA Meeting in New Delhi

As our food supply becomes increasingly globalized the need to strengthen food safety systems in and between all countries is becoming more and more evident. Codex has been playing a key role internationally in the area of food standards, with its dual mandates of protecting the health of consumers and ensuring fair practices in the food trade.

The 20th Session of the FAO/WHO Codex Coordinating Committee for Asia (CCASIA) was hosted by the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India in New Delhi, India from 26 to 30 September. Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia highlighted that International food trade is now a 1.5 trillion dollar a year industry and the urgent need to strengthen food safety systems in and between all countries.

Distance Learning Tool (DLT)

WHO developed a distance learning tool (DLT) in collaboration with the Chulabhorn Research Institute (Bangkok, Thailand), a WHO Collaborating Centre. This DTL should be used by scientists and risk managers to analyse the food contamination data submitted to GEMS/Food. A password protected access to the learning tool is available upon request to: vergerp@who.int.
