Sri Lanka Floods and landslides - December 2014

Sri Lanka has been experiencing severe weather conditions since mid-December leading to heavy floods and landslides in 22 of its 25 administrative districts. As of 29 December 2014, it is estimated that about 1.1 million people have been affected and around 118,000 people have been moved to 618 safe locations identified for the displaced. Ministry of health has reported that many healthcare institutions are also affected and are having an increased demand for services. Government continues to provide assistance to the affected population through the government agents and other officials in the affected areas, supported by the Armed Forces. Ministry of health has requested WHO for financial support of USD30,000 and assistance has been provided through SEARHEF (South East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund) on 30 December 2014.
