Bhutan Emergency Medical Team (BEMT) Capacity Building Workshop

SEARO with the support of the WHO Country Office and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted a workshop for the formation of the Bhutan Emergency Medical Team (BEMT) on 9-11 April in Paro. There were 28 participants coming from the Ministry of Health, the Armed Forces of Bhutan, health professionals from academia and key hospitals including experts in emergency medicine, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, nursing, pharmacy and lab services, hospital administration.
Facilitators were from WHO and the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team (NZMAT). Over the course of the workshop, significant progress was made in developing an international deployable Emergency Medical Team in Bhutan, according to global standards. Clinical and logistics standard operating procedures were also developed. These are expected to guide the work of the BEMT when responding to emergencies outside as well as inside Bhutan.
