The Board sets the strategic direction of the APO based upon the advice of the STAC, it monitors the implementation of the annual work plan, oversees the Secretariat and approves the budget. Its membership is open to governments, organizations and institutions, universities and research institutes, foundations and civil society organizations, and multilateral agencies.
The Board convenes twice a year. Additional consultations take place electronically and by teleconference call, as needed.
The Board appoints a Chair for 3 years, which is renewable for additional 3 years at the discretion of the Board. Dr Mario C Villaverde is the current Chair of the Board. He was appointed the Board Chair effective January 2019.
